Abstract:This optimization issues arising in the selection of the optimal sensor and actuator configurations for parameter estimation in structural dynamics, whose response is excited by unit impulse, are addressed. The problem is formulated as a multi-objective discrete optimization. GAs, NSGA II is well suited for approximately solving the resulting discrete optimization problem by exploring an infinitesimal fraction of the total number of possible sensor configurations. Two objectives are to minimize the number of sensors and maximize the response of 2-norm axial strain in the truss structure, while the discrete variables are related to the number and location of sensors and the location of actuators. Using 0 and 1 represents that the beam of the truss has no sensor or the beam has a sensor, respectively. The Pareto optimal sensor configurations can find more effective dynamic response and few sensors.
